***I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review***

Born with a deadly magic she cannot control, Kyara is forced to become an assassin. Known as the Poison Flame, she is notorious and lethal, but secretly seeks freedom from both her untamed power and the blood spell that commands her. She is tasked with capturing the notorious rebel called the Shadowfox, but everything changes when she learns her target’s true identity.

Darvyn ol-Tahlyro may be the most powerful Earthsinger in generations, but guilt over those he couldn’t save tortures him daily. He isn’t sure he can trust the mysterious young woman who claims to need his help, but when he discovers Kyara can unlock the secrets of his past, he can’t stay away.

As forbidden desire ignites their hearts, Kyara and Darvyn grapple with betrayal, old promises, and older prophecies—all while trying to stop a war. And when a new threat emerges, the cost of their love might just be too high.

I was given an advanced reader’s copy of Whispers of Shadow & Flame for my honest review. I am such a huge fan of L. Penelope, I was pretty excited to get the opportunity! I absolutely loved Song of Blood and Stone which is the first book in the Earthsingers Chronicles and where we first get introduced to Darvyn. When I heard he was going to be the main character in the second book of the series, Whispers of Shadow & Flame, I was beyond excited for it! I have quickly become a fan of L. Penelope and I really enjoyed reading the first book so I had no doubt I would enjoy the second one.

Of course, I was not disappointed!

The world of Earthsingers is so intricately created, reading these books will transport you to an alternate realm. Isn’t that why we read though? I know I do! I fell in love with the characters Darvyn and Kyara as quickly as I did with Jasminda and Jack. They are amazing characters that will remain on your mind and in your heart, long after you finish reading.

It was an phenomenal read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

So it starts with Kyara is tasked with a mission from the True Father to capture Darvyn who is known only by the name Shadowfox. She asks for his help so she can gain his trust to complete her mission. Only, things don’t turn out the way she plans because unknown to her, Darvyn is the one she is looking for! I loved Darvyn and Kyara together. It was like fate (or should I say L. Penelope?) had brought them together to find the best in each other and it was so incredible to read as it all came together. The build up to a relationship is the best part of a book for me. And when he kissed her for the first time, I swooned. It was a breathtaking moment!

Honestly, I was rooting for Kyara from the start. She will have that effect on you. There is this one scene where this little girl asks Kyara can she braid her hair and it was seriously adorable. I have to say it is probably one of my favorite scenes in the book. We also get a several connections to the Song of Blood and Stone book. Some of them REALLY huge. I hate spoilers so I’ll stop there but when you read it, you’ll know what I am talking about.

Overall, this was an awesome addition to the series! I tried to think of one thing I didn’t like about this book and I can’t think of anything! Well, other than the fact that it does end on a cliffhanger. But this is good news for me because I want more of the Earthsinger world! I wish I could spell a song to make L. Penelope write faster! (See what I did there? Ha!)

And can I just say that I love the fact that I am living in a world where authors like L. Penelope are giving us black girl book nerds a fantasy novel where we can actually see people like us saving the world and falling in love.

It’s pretty awesome isn’t it?

It’s hard to be normal when you see the dead everywhere. So I gave up. I just focus on staying out of their way. But the guy haunting my roommate is different. He’s impossible to ignore, and now other people can see him too.

He says my roommate is the only one who can save him from an eternity of torment. But one night he follows me into my nightmare and rescues me from my demons. Now he’s all I think about. This must be what it’s like to fall… for someone who can never be mine.

A lifetime ago, I found my soulmate in the human world. But being angelborn means I don’t have a soul. When I lost my one true love, I lost my future and my freedom. Now, I have a second chance — she’s been reborn and I must gain her love again or serve out the rest of my eternal sentence alone.

But this time I am a fugitive with powerful angels hunting me, and I’m running out of time. You only get one soulmate, and mine isn’t the broken, scarred girl, who sees what no one else can. She’s a distraction I can scarcely afford — but I’m unable to stay away from her.
