Book Review | Angelborn by L. Penelope

Book: Angelborn
Author: L. Penelope
Release Date: April 28, 2015
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (Amazon)

It’s hard to be normal when you see the dead everywhere. So I gave up. I just focus on staying out of their way. But the guy haunting my roommate is different. He’s impossible to ignore, and now other people can see him too.

He says my roommate is the only one who can save him from an eternity of torment. But one night he follows me into my nightmare and rescues me from my demons. Now he’s all I think about. This must be what it’s like to fall… for someone who can never be mine.

A lifetime ago, I found my soulmate in the human world. But being angelborn means I don’t have a soul. When I lost my one true love, I lost my future and my freedom. Now, I have a second chance — she’s been reborn and I must gain her love again or serve out the rest of my eternal sentence alone.

But this time I am a fugitive with powerful angels hunting me, and I’m running out of time. You only get one soulmate, and mine isn’t the broken, scarred girl, who sees what no one else can. She’s a distraction I can scarcely afford — but I’m unable to stay away from her.

Another book read from the author L. Penelope and I am officially on the bandwagon! She is an amazing writer and Angelborn just proves she is an author whose books you want to add to your TBR List. I definitely enjoyed the book and recommend it if you enjoy reading about star-crossed lovers and angels! And I know it’s only a novella but there were some things I feel that were left out which made me feel like it wasn’t complete.

Angelborn involves the characters Maia and Caleb. Maia has a special ability that allows her to see the dead and angels. Caleb is a half-angel who escapes from the Wasteland to find his One who happens to be the roommate of Maia. Maia was quite an interesting character and her ability was fascinating. I would have loved to learn more about it though. That was something that plagued me after I read the book. How did she end up with the ability to see the dead and most importantly why?

Caleb was a dreamboat! Seriously, he is my new book boyfriend. We did get to know more about him and how he ended up on Earth and in the Wasteland. I really enjoyed reading about him. He was a great character and his story did not feel as incomplete as Maia’s did.

However, I do feel like the ending was rushed and their feelings as well. When Maia and Caleb first interacted, I knew it was going to lead to an amazing connection and while they did have some awesome moments that were seriously drool worthy, I wanted more for them. I do wish that we could get another book about Maia and Caleb because I can see so much more in these characters that we weren’t given. And maybe we will. Who knows?

Also, I want to mention Helix who was the best. He was a bit of a jerk but to me it didn’t seem like his overall personality. It seemed like a façade he was putting on to force our characters to acknowledge their feelings. I really can’t wait to read more about him! Even though he was a minor character, he was definitely interesting enough to catch my attention. And Wren as well but we will be getting his book so I am definitely excited about that!

Overall, I did enjoy Angelborn and I look forward to more of the series in the future! The plot was really interesting and there was enough going on that it kept my attention. While the ending did feel a bit rushed, I still loved the book and recommend it! It was a good read.
